Our Mission
BrainyCalculators exists to make accurate, professional-grade calculations accessible to everyone — free of charge, without sign-up, and without the complexity of spreadsheets or specialised software. We believe that financial literacy, health awareness, and mathematical understanding are improved when people have immediate access to reliable tools that explain their results clearly.
Formula Sourcing Standards
Every formula implemented in our calculators is drawn from one or more of the following authoritative sources:
- Government and regulatory bodies — HMRC, CFPB, IRS, NHS, and equivalent national authorities for tax, finance, and health standards.
- International health organisations — World Health Organization (WHO), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and ACSM for health and fitness calculators.
- Academic and scientific literature — Peer-reviewed journals and textbooks are used for statistical, engineering, and scientific calculators.
- International standards bodies — BIPM (SI units), ISO, IEC, and NIST for engineering, measurement, and conversion tools.
- Financial industry standards — Actuarial Society, CFA Institute, and standard banking amortisation formulas for financial calculators.
Where multiple valid formulas exist for the same calculation (for example, the Mifflin-St Jeor and Harris-Benedict equations for BMR), we implement all recognised variants and explain the differences so users can choose the most appropriate for their situation.
Content Review Process
Each calculator and its accompanying explanatory content goes through the following steps before publication:
- Formula identification — The standard formula(s) used in the relevant professional field are identified and documented with source references.
- Implementation and testing — The formula is coded in JavaScript. Results are verified against known reference values and published tables before the tool is made live.
- Cross-validation — Results are compared against established third-party tools (such as official government calculators) to confirm accuracy.
- Content review — All explanatory text, formula descriptions, and worked examples are reviewed for accuracy and clarity.
- Disclosure — The formula, its source, and any limitations are disclosed on the calculator page. Where results should not substitute for professional advice, this is clearly stated.
Update and Review Schedule
We review our content on the following schedule:
| Calculator Type | Review Frequency | Trigger for Update |
|---|---|---|
| Tax & Finance | Annual (minimum) | New tax year, regulatory changes |
| Health & Fitness | When guidelines change | Updated WHO/NHS/NIH guidance |
| Math & Science | As needed | Standards body updates |
| Engineering | As needed | Building code or standard revisions |
| General / Everyday | Biannual | User feedback, formula corrections |
Corrections Policy
If an error is identified in any calculator or explanatory content — whether reported by a user, identified internally, or triggered by a change in the underlying standard — we aim to correct it within 5 working days. Significant corrections are noted on the affected calculator page. We take accuracy seriously: any user who identifies an error is welcome to report it via our Contact page.
Independence and Conflicts of Interest
BrainyCalculators does not accept payment to feature specific financial products, insurance providers, or services within calculator results or recommendations. Our tools display objective calculations based solely on the inputs provided. Where a calculator result might inform a financial product decision (for example, a mortgage affordability calculator), we do not favour or promote any particular lender or provider.
Not Professional Advice
The calculators and content on BrainyCalculators are provided for informational and educational purposes only. They do not constitute financial, tax, medical, legal, or professional advice. For important financial or health decisions, always consult a qualified professional. See our full Disclaimer for details.
