What is Drywall?

Drywall, also known as plasterboard, gypsum board, or sheetrock (a trade name), is a panel made of calcium sulfate dihydrate (gypsum) pressed between two thick sheets of paper. It is the dominant interior wall and ceiling finishing material in North America and Australia, replacing older wet plaster systems due to its faster installation and lower labour cost.

Drywall is manufactured in standard sheet sizes (most commonly 4×8 ft) and thicknesses from 1/4" to 5/8". The most common residential thickness is 1/2", used for interior walls and ceilings. Type X (5/8") is required by building codes for fire-rated assemblies between garages and living areas. Moisture-resistant "green board" and mould-resistant "purple board" variants are used in bathrooms and basements.

A drywall project involves calculating the number of sheets to cover the total surface area, accounting for window and door cutouts, and applying a waste factor (typically 10–15%) for damaged panels and odd-shaped cuts. Additional materials include joint compound, drywall tape, corner bead, screws, and primer. Accurate estimation reduces waste and controls project cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

1/2 drywall is standard for interior walls and ceilings. 5/8 (Type X) is required for fire-rated assemblies. 3/8 can be used for curved walls. 1/4 is used for skim coating over existing surfaces.

A general rule is 1 screw per square foot of drywall. This calculator uses that standard. Screws should be placed 12–16 apart on studs and 8 apart on edges.

A standard rule of thumb is approximately 0.05 bags (of a 4.5 gallon bucket) per square foot of drywall. Three coats are typically applied: tape coat, fill coat, and finish coat.

Horizontal hanging is generally preferred on walls as it reduces the number of seams and places the butt joints (harder to finish) in the middle of the wall. Vertical hanging may be preferred in rooms with very high ceilings.

Not applying a waste factor
Always add 10–15% to the calculated sheet count — cuts, damaged boards, and irregular shapes guarantee some material loss.

Window and door openings should be subtracted from total wall area before calculating sheet count to avoid over-ordering.

Garages attached to living spaces require Type X (5/8") by code — using 1/2" fails the fire-separation requirement.
