The primary outputs are the number of posts, rails, and pickets (or panels) needed, along with the total material cost based on per-unit pricing. Accurate material estimation is critical before any fencing project — over-ordering wastes money, while under-ordering causes project delays when additional materials must be sourced mid-build.
The calculation begins with total fence run length, which is divided by post spacing (typically 6–8 feet on centre) to determine post count. Rail count follows from the number of horizontal rails per bay (typically 2–3 for standard wood fencing) multiplied by the number of bays. Picket count is derived from rail spacing, picket width, and the gap between pickets — all of which determine how many vertical boards fit per linear foot. Corner and gate posts must also be accounted for, as they alter the spacing count and typically require heavier-gauge hardware.
Fence material choice dramatically affects both cost and longevity. Pressure-treated pine is the most common and affordable framing material, while cedar and redwood offer natural rot resistance without chemical treatment. Vinyl and composite fencing eliminate maintenance but carry a higher upfront cost. Chain-link is the most economical choice for large perimeter enclosures.
