Frequently Asked Questions

Freight class (NMFC class) is a standardized classification system for LTL shipping ranging from Class 50 to Class 500. It is determined by four factors: density (weight per cubic foot), stowability, ease of handling, and liability. Higher class numbers = lower density and higher per-pound shipping rates. Class 50 (dense, heavy items like metal) is cheapest; Class 500 (low-density items like ping pong balls) is most expensive.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) means your shipment shares trailer space with other shippers. It is cost-effective for shipments under ~15,000 lbs or 10–12 pallets. FTL (Full Truckload) means you rent the entire trailer — better for large shipments, time-sensitive freight, or freight requiring special handling. The LTL/FTL break-even point is typically around 10,000–12,000 lbs or 10+ pallets.

Dimensional (DIM) weight is a pricing method used when the package volume is large relative to its actual weight. It is calculated as L × W × H ÷ DIM divisor. For LTL/FTL, density (lbs per cubic foot) is used to determine freight class rather than a DIM divisor. For air freight, DIM weight (÷139) is compared against actual weight and the higher value is billed.

A fuel surcharge is an additional charge levied by carriers to offset fluctuating fuel costs. It is typically a percentage of the base freight charge and varies weekly or monthly based on the DOE (Department of Energy) fuel price index. Typical surcharges range from 8–20% of base freight. Always factor in fuel surcharges when comparing carrier quotes.

Air freight is charged on the greater of actual weight or volumetric weight (L × W × H in cm ÷ 6,000, or in inches ÷ 366). The volumetric factor (DIM divisor) varies by airline: most use 6,000 cm³/kg (139 in³/lb). Rates are typically quoted per kg or lb in the applicable currency, with base rate, fuel surcharge, security surcharge, and destination handling fees.
