One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. A 2 cu.ft. bag covers 27/2 = 13.5 bags per cubic yard. A 3 cu.ft. bag equals 9 bags per cubic yard.
2–3 inches is optimal for weed suppression and moisture retention. Avoid going deeper than 4 inches as it can suffocate plant roots and create anaerobic conditions.
