A standard dump truck holds 10–14 cubic yards of material. A tandem axle truck can carry 14–16 cubic yards. For small jobs, many suppliers offer mini-loads of 1–5 cubic yards.

Mulch: ~400–800 lbs. Topsoil: ~1,600 lbs. Gravel: ~1,700–2,800 lbs. Sand: ~1,600 lbs. Weights vary with moisture content. This calculator uses typical dry weights.

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. A 2 cu.ft. bag covers 27/2 = 13.5 bags per cubic yard. A 3 cu.ft. bag equals 9 bags per cubic yard.

2–3 inches is optimal for weed suppression and moisture retention. Avoid going deeper than 4 inches as it can suffocate plant roots and create anaerobic conditions.
