A paver calculator estimates the number of paving stones, the volume of sand base, and the quantity of gravel sub-base needed to complete a paved area such as a patio, driveway, walkway, or garden path. Getting quantities right before purchasing materials saves both money and wasted trips to the builder's merchant — pavers are sold in fixed quantities and sand and gravel are sold by the ton, so accurate estimates directly translate to accurate material costs.
The calculation requires three main inputs: the area to be paved (length × width), the size of the individual paver (to determine how many fit per square foot or square metre), and the desired depth of both the sand bedding layer and the compacted gravel sub-base. A standard residential patio installation typically uses a 4–6 inch compacted gravel sub-base topped with a 1-inch sand bedding layer before the pavers are laid. Adjustments are made for waste (typically 5–10% overage is added to account for cuts and breakages at edges and corners).
Paver projects require careful material sequencing: the sub-base must be compacted before the sand bedding is screeded, and the sand must be levelled precisely before pavers are laid. Underestimating the gravel sub-base depth is one of the most common causes of paver failure — an inadequate base leads to settling, heaving in freeze-thaw cycles, and surface undulation. This calculator ensures all three material layers are correctly quantified so projects can be budgeted and sourced accurately before work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Running bond is the simplest and most common — pavers offset by half like brickwork. Herringbone (90° or 45°) is strongest and best for driveways. Basketweave is decorative and works well for patios. Herringbone patterns require about 10% more material due to cuts at edges.
A standard installation requires 4–6 of compacted gravel base for foot traffic and 6–8 for vehicles, topped with 1 of sand for the paver bed. This calculator uses 4 gravel and 1 sand as defaults.
Most pavers use 1/4 (6mm) joints filled with polymeric sand. Wider joints (up to 1/2) allow for slight irregularities in paver size. Tighter joints look cleaner but require more precise cutting.
Sealing is optional but recommended. It enhances color, prevents staining, and helps lock in joint sand. Seal within 90 days of installation and re-seal every 3–5 years.
